Cats have the best advocate and translator they could possibly have in Constance. In a better world, felines wouldn’t need her for that: they could simply rule, as they clearly were intended to do, and we lesser beings would worship and obey, like the Egyptians. But I think in that world, the cats would consider Constance one of their own, and maybe for her sake they would be charitible toward us. In this topsy-turvy world we actually inhabit — the one we humans think we ought to manage — cats need a tactful and astute intermediary, from time to time, in order to live gracefully among us.
